Getting Started With Pegasus Special Riders!
Getting started at Pegasus Special Riders is simple. Whether you’re exploring therapeutic riding for the first time or looking to enroll for the upcoming season, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
New riders begin with a brief intake session — a friendly tour of our facility, a short assessment, and a conversation to understand your goals and needs. Once approved, you’ll be matched with a horse, instructor, and volunteers based on your abilities and therapeutic goals. We work hard to keep that pairing consistent so you can build comfort and confidence week after week.
Sessions run April through October in six-week blocks, with 30-minute lessons once a week. Spots fill on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage families to register early. If your preferred time isn’t available, we’ll add you to our waitlist and reach out as soon as a slot opens up.

The bond between horse and rider isn't just powerful — it's transformative.
At Pegasus Special Riders, our passion is simple: improving lives. We provide equine assisted activities to children and adults facing physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, or social challenges — creating a space where growth happens naturally and joy is never far behind.
Therapeutic riding is more than just a lesson. It’s an opportunity for your loved one to build strength, confidence, and independence while experiencing the unmatched connection that only a horse can offer. Surrounded by nature and guided by certified PATH instructors and dedicated volunteers, every rider is supported every step of the way.
Our facility offers a safe, supportive, and non-competitive environment where riders of all abilities can thrive. Time spent with our horses—in whatever way works best for each person—creates the genuine bonds that make Pegasus so special. That connection is at the heart of everything we do.

Your Questions Answered
Here are some common questions about our equine therapy services
Who is eligible to ride?
Riders must be at least 4 years old and face physical, mental, and/or emotional challenges. Each applicant goes through a risk/benefit review to ensure therapeutic riding is a safe and beneficial fit. The maximum weight limit is 180 lbs, though exceptions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
How do I register?
Download the registration forms below or call 815-973-3177. Once your completed application and supporting documentation are received, you’ll be scheduled for a rider intake. New riders must also submit a physician’s statement before being accepted into the program.
What happens at the intake session?
The intake includes a tour of the facility, a brief assessment, and a short interview to understand your rider’s abilities and needs. A new rider must be approved before their first lesson.
What does a typical session look like?
Lessons are 30 minutes, once a week, for six weeks. Riders are paired with a horse, a certified instructor, and trained volunteers based on ability and therapeutic need. PSR strives to keep that team consistent throughout the session.
When do sessions run?
Sessions run April through October with a week-long break between each. The 2026 sessions are:
- Session 1: April 13 – May 22
- Session 2: June 1 – July 10
- Session 3: July 20 – August 28
- Session 4: September 7 – October 16
How much does it cost?
There is a one-time annual non-refundable insurance fee of $45, plus $25 per lesson. A full six-week session totals $150, due before the session begins.
Is financial assistance available?
Yes. Limited scholarship funds are available for riders with demonstrated financial need. A scholarship application and completed registration packet must be submitted before each requested session. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

What should my rider wear?
Helmets are mandatory and provided by PSR, though riders may bring their own ASTM/SEI rated helmet. Long pants are recommended, and sturdy closed-toe shoes with a moderate heel are required. Sandals, flip flops, crocs, and open-toed shoes are not permitted.
How do I cancel or report an absence?
All absences must be reported through the Teamreach app. PSR asks for 24-hour notice when possible. Notifications less than four hours before a lesson count as an unnotified absence, and two or more unnotified absences may result in losing your lesson slot.
What if my lesson is cancelled?
Cancellation notices are sent through the Teamreach app. Riders, parents, and guardians are responsible for monitoring the app, as PSR no longer sends text message notifications. Make-up lessons are not available.
